Community House & Information Centre (CHIC) is a non-profit community
service organization committed to meeting the needs of the international
community in Kobe, Japan. CHIC's goal is to serve as a bridge between
the international community and the Kobe community at large, to help both
newcomers and long-time residents get the most out of their stay in Japan.
Among the many services offered by CHIC:
- International staff of volunteers who are ready to answer questions
and help in any way they can
- "Bloom Where You Are Planted" -- an annual orientation program for newcomers
- Publications "Living in Kobe," a comprehensive guide packed with valuable
information for residents, and "Dining in Kobe," a guide to restaurants
in Kobe and environs
- Extensive files of travel and other information in English
- Wide variety of classes in Japanese language and culture, cooking, ballet,
yoga and more, and monthly one-day classes in cooking and crafts
- Special day- and overnight trips to interesting places in the region
- Regular exhibitions of works by local artists
- Morning get-togethers
CHIC is supervised by a Board of Directors and is operated by an administrator
and 40 volunteers. Funding comes from membership fees, class registration
fees, sales of CHIC publications and corporate donations.
Office hours: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday (closed national
holidays and July 14 to August 19)
